From the Youth Pastor

Hello Again FBC Family and Friends,
“I don’t understand, but I will do as you say.” Mrs. Brisby to the Great Owl from The Secret of NIMH.
Ever since I was a small child, I have been drawn to the animated films of Don Bluth. There is a certain gritty realism to his movies that doesn’t hold back from teaching children that life can sometimes be hard and difficult. In The Secret of NIMH, a widowed mouse has a son who is dying from pneumonia and she must find a cure for him. After she gets her medicine, she finds out that the farmer has already begun to plow and if she doesn’t move her family, sick son included, they will all perish. So she goes to see the Great Owl, a natural predator, to gain his wisdom. His counsel to her doesn’t make any sense at first, but she says even though she doesn’t understand, she will obey.
Part of this should sound familiar. We were in a terrible and tragic situation ourselves. Our sin had cut us off from God and we could never be good enough to earn His forgiveness. All we were able to do was fail miserably. He sent us prophets and we didn’t listen to them. He allowed us to have earthly rulers and some were pretty good and others were as evil as you can get. So, God finally comes down in the form of a little baby to live a sinless life and die in our place. He sends and angel named Gabriel to give a message to a 13-16 year old virgin named Mary.

26 27 28 favored woman! The Lord is with you!” In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings,

29 30 31 3233 forever; his Kingdom will never end!” Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean.“Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God!You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. And he will reign over Israel

34Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.”

35 3637 The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God. What’s more, your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age! People used to say she was barren, but she has conceived a son and is now in her sixth month. For the word of God will never fail.”

38Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her.

Did Mary understand? No, not completely. What the angel described was impossible from our perspective, but here’s the lesson: We don’t have to completely understand. God simply wants us to obey. Less questions. More obedience.

The best is yet to come,
