About FBC and What we Believe

First Baptist Church has been around since 1860, so it obviously has some staying power. The church began the year before the beginning of the War Between the States. In those early years it was a part-time church sharing facilities with the Methodist and Christian congregations. In the early 1890s the church purchased the lot at the corner of Tenth and Main and has been there ever since that time. The property has gone from one corner on the block to covering the entire block and even spilling over to an adjacent block.

First Baptist Church is an autonomous body, but it is affiliated with three other groups. It is a part of the Purchase Area Baptist Association, the Kentucky Baptist Convention, and the Southern Baptist Convention. The work of these other entities is supported by our gifts to the Cooperative Program and other designated offering given for these purposes. Throughout her history First Baptist Church has not wavered concerning her core beliefs. Our passion is to see people come to Christ and to grow in Christ. We desire for God to use us both here and throughout the world.

First Baptist Church seeks to minister to all the needs of her members through teaching, training, discipleship, worship, and pastoral care. We seek to meet the varied needs of our community through our support and involvement for the jail, benevolent concerns, care of transients, the crisis pregnancy center, Operation Community Christmas, and other outreach events. Our concern extends beyond our local community and county to support ministries in Calloway County, Louisville, and Eastern Kentucky. Our involvement does not stop at the state line either as we support ministries in Europe, Southeast Asia, Central America, and Africa.

Our Beliefs

  • We believe the Bible is the Word of God, and it is the sole source for authority in matters of faith and practice.
  • We believe in God the Father who loved us so much that He sent His Son to be the Savior of the world.
  • We believe in God the Son who was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, died on the cross, rose from the grave, ascended to heaven, and is coming again some day.
  • We believe in God the Holy Spirit who is God’s personal presence in our lives and who draws and points us to Jesus.
  • We believe salvation is by grace through faith and is made possible by the sacrificial death of Jesus on the cross.
  • We believe God’s mission is for us to bring glory to Him by spreading the good news of eternal life through His Son to the entire world.

Our Heart

The heart beat of First Baptist Church is to see the Lord honored and glorified in all we do. God has assembled a unique group of individuals in Benton who are dedicated to carrying out the Great Commission in Benton, Marshall County, and throughout the world. Our passion is to see people come to Christ and to grow in Christ. We desire for God to use us both here and throughout the world.
